While the saying goes “April showers bring May flowers,” in Montana and much of the Mountain West, you are more likely to find that the daffodil or tulip that bloomed yesterday will be covered in snow today. But these late snowfalls eventually give way to the beautiful sight of summer, which at Tippet Rise begins on June 10, when we reopen for hiking and biking.

The self-guided hiking and biking season has been extended this year, through September 25, allowing for more visitors to experience the monumental and site-specific artworks sited across the ranch via our 13.25-mile trail system.

Whether you are seeking a physically demanding experience, with monumental artworks by Ensamble Studio, Mark di Suvero, and Stephen Talasnik as your reward; or if you prefer to take in the beautiful scenery at a more leisurely pace, stopping beneath and beside works by Francis Kéré, Patrick Dougherty, Ai Weiwei, and Alexander Calder, there are trail options to meet various needs. Our Hiking & Biking page includes a detailed map and trail descriptions, including the family friendly Gnomon trail, with options to hike or bike one, three, or five miles, or the moderate to difficult Meridian, Azimuth, Andesite, and Ecliptic Loop trail, with the possibility to gain as much as 2,000 vertical feet.

Hiking and biking at Tippet Rise are free of charge, though reservations are required. Registration is now open on the Hiking & Biking page. Here you will also find the latest information on what you should bring (your mountain bike or e-bike, required biking helmet, hiking shoes, rain jacket) and items we ask you to leave at home (your furry friend, drone, etc.).

All this exercise and art appreciation is bound to make a person hungry! Beginning July 1, an assortment of sandwiches, wholesome grain bowls, picnic-style charcuterie plates, cookies, bars, chips, and cold drinks, prepared by Samurai Sue’s Everyday Foods, will be available for purchase from Will’s Shed, with the option to take your food out onto the trails, or in and around the Cottonwood Campus. Then, during the concert season from August 26 to September 25, lunch and dinner on Fridays, and lunch on Saturdays and Sundays, will be available for purchase from our culinary partner PREROGATIvE Kitchen, which was recently named a semifinalist for best chef in our region by the James Beard Foundation. They will be offering locally sourced snacks, meals, and beverages. From cheese plates, to roast chicken, to the perfect glass of wine, you will be able to enjoy a wonderful meal surrounded by the beauty of Tippet Rise. (Please note, from June 10 – 30, we kindly ask that you bring your own provisions.)

We hope you will make your reservation to visit Tippet Rise today!
