Paris in a Piano: May’s Tippet Rise podcast
May 6, 2019
The May edition of the Tippet Rise podcast shares a conversation between the art center’s cofounder, Peter Halstead, and the celebrated French pianist and composer, Julien Brocal. The two discuss inspiration, the creative process, and Paris in the 1920’s. They also explore music by composers Federico Mompou and Maurice Ravel, and how Julien approaches his own compositions.
A friend to us at Tippet Rise, Julien has spent much time at the art center, not only to perform, but also to record. Fittingly, his second solo recording, Reflections, released by Rubicon in 2018, features works by Mompou and Ravel and was recorded here at the art center. This July, Julien will come to Tippet Rise to perform the world premiere of three of his own pieces—Reflections, Into the Wild, and Snowing on the Moon—as well as two of Chopin’s Ballades and works by Bach and the distinguished nature-inspired Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks.
Peter Halstead is a composer and a pianist in his own right and the conversation the two share is wide-ranging and fascinating. To listen to “Paris in a Piano,” produced by Zachary Patten, please click on the link below.
