New events and season updates from Tippet Rise

August 14, 2024

It has been another lively and busy summer at Tippet Rise! Hikers are challenging themselves to see as many artworks as possible installed throughout the 15-mile trail system, taking breaks to picnic in the open-air cabin near Mark di Suvero’s Proverb, or to lounge in the Folds by Ensamble Studio. Cyclists have brought gravel bikes, mountain bikes, e-bikes – and even a tandem road bike.

Sculpture van tours concluded last Sunday, and we so appreciate all the fantastic drivers who led these excursions. No two tours are ever exactly alike, and that goes for our van guests too – participants this year ranged in age from three months to 100 years old!

As we prepare to welcome musicians and guests over the next five weeks, there are several new ways to visit Tippet Rise.

New Events
We will welcome Montana’s current Poet Laureate, Chris La Tray, to Tippet Rise on Friday, September 13 for a poetry reading at 3:00 PM. The event will take place outdoors within our main campus.

Chris La Tray is a Métis storyteller, a descendent of the Pembina Band of the mighty Red River of the North, and an enrolled member of the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians. He writes the weekly newsletter “An Irritable Métis” and lives near Frenchtown, Montana. His new book, “Becoming Little Shell: A Landless Indian’s Journey Home” can be purchased here.

On Saturday, September 14 at 2:00 PM, Tippet Rise’s co-founder and pianist Peter Halstead is leading a special concert with members of Roots in the Sky, Montana’s premier chamber choir. This performance will feature several familiar pop songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein, Grease, and Abba alongside another hit tune – Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Peter will tell the recently unearthed story behind the sonata.

Advance registration for both programs is required. Reservations are available on the Events and tickets are free of charge.

Installation of The Soil You See… and Crossroads II
Two new artworks were installed within the landscape of Tippet Rise this summer. Wendy Red Star’s The Soil You See… greets visitors as they make their way to the main Cottonwood Campus, with its red thumbprint made of glass changing throughout the day as the sunlight and sky illuminate it. Richard Serra’s Crossroads II has created new meditative paths from which to take in the expansive view of Murphy Canyon, and far beyond.
